Warriors Lose a Great Fight at Wilson! The Warriors headed into enemy territory, with outsiders thinking that the game was over before it started. West had to go to Wilson's small field, with almost no room for spectators and face the #1 ranked team in CIF(top 10 in the nation), a team with 5 Division 1 and 2 Division 2 signees. The Warriors were up to the task, to the surprise of many. From the outset, the Warriors battled hard against an offensively talented team, keeping the Bruins to shooting from way outside of their box. The Warriors were without Laura Day and Aiko Seffinger due to prior commitments. West continued its battle, hoping to get an opportunity against a stingy Wilson defense that had only given up 7 goals on the year. Senior Megan Cunningham and freshman Rebecca Maier tried to work their magic through the defense to no avail in the first half. The score was 0-0 at the half.
In the second half, it was more of the same, with the Warriors containing Wilson to shots from the outside. GK Brittini Salmon was her normal amazing self, tipping a few strikes over the bar. It wasn't until the 55th minute that Wilson had a long throw into the box of #18 who stood about 6 ft tall. She flicked the ball to the far post and there was Samantha Prochnow to put the ball into the net. West had to switch into attack mode, pushing an extra forward up the field. The Warriors were still unable to accomplish much of an attack. With 10 minutes left in the game, the Warriors switched to 4 forwards, with 3 midfielders and 3 defenders. The Warriors saw signs of an attack and some opportunities coming. With 5 minutes left in the game, the Warriors abandoned most of the defense to get the equalizing goal, leaving only 2 defenders back with the goalkeeper. The Warriors saw 3 freekicks into the box, be cleared out and the final one go long and give the Bruins the breakaway that they had been looking for. The Bruins put another goal away, 2 minutes into injury time, to end West's season.
The Warriors gave all they had and were unable to slay the giant of LB Wilson. West season ends with a 14-9-3 record.
The Warriors coach is once again honored to have coached a team that gave everything they had and proud of the heart they showed in this final game.
To our seniors, Nicole Choy, Megan Cunningham, Laura Day, Kristen Delsigne, Samantha Hoffman, Emily La Rue, Phyllicia Marquez and Brittini Salmon, it has been a priveledge to have coached you and to have been a part of your lives for the past 4 years. The overtime period in the game between PV and Redondo that ended in a 0-0 tie was played and ended in a very tense 1-1 tie. The tie left the Warriors all alone in 3rd place in the Bay League, behind Mira Costa and Palos Verdes.
The Warriors will find out their Division 1 playoff fate on Monday afternoon. The will be traveling, most likely to meet a first place team, on Saturday February 16th. The time will be announced on Tuesday. You can check here for the updates or www.cifss.org after 1pm on Monday.
CONGRATULATIONS WARRIORS!!!! Updated on:February 9, 2008, 12:18 amWarriors Silence Redondo......Wait for Outcome of PV v Red OTThe Warriors headed into their last game of league knowing that the needed a win to get to the playoffs. The Warriors were able to host their opponent for only the 7th time this season. Redondo came into the game needing only a tie to secure a playoff berth.
The Warriors were attacking with pace and pressure in the first half. In the 3rd minute of the game, Kayla Gonzalez had a one on one with the Seahawk keeper but was unable to control the ball and the GK was able to handle the ball. In the 15th minute, Heather Ostrom took a 25 yard shot on goal that the Redondo GK couldn't handle, but pushed it wide for a corner kick. Finally in the 34th minute, Aiko Seffinger took a shot that was deflected into the box. Freshman Rebecca Maier found herself with the ball and pushed it past the Redondo keeper into the net. Three minutes later, Megan Cunningham made a superb run through the middle. She sent a hard pass into the middle of the box that was deflected and found the head of Phyllicia Marquez. The ball lazered into the net for Wests 2nd goal of the day. About 2 minutes later, Megan Cunningham found herself with an opportunity to score, but the Redondo GK was able to get to the ball in time for the save.
In the second half, the Warriors slowed their attack down and concentrated on defending their lead. Redondo tried to attack but with the strong defense of Hoffman, Campis and Oslund, the Seahawks could only manage shots from the outside. Brittini Salmon was up to stopping the few real opportunities that Redondo had. In the 65th minute, the Warriors dropped into a double stopper 5 person defensive line and in the 72nd minute the Warriors only left one forward up top and committed to keeping Redondo off the scoreboard. The Warriors were successful as Brittini Salmon tallied her career high tying 13th shutout of the season. West wins 2-0 and has a chance to go to the playoffs.
Unfortunately, late news leaves the Warriors waiting another day to see if they captured 3rd place. Redondo-Palos Verdes have to play an overtime period(2-10 minute halves) that was not played after there first match that ended in a tie. If PV wins, it will share a Bay League crown with Mira Costa and Redondo will drop to 5th. If Redondo wins, it will overtake West for 3rd and PV stays in second place. If the game ends in a tie, Mira Costa wins the Bay League outright, PV second and West takes 3rd. The OT period will be held at 3pm at Redondo.
In the Warrior JV game, the Warriors emerged victorious ending the season with a 4-1 win over Redondo. Alex Lim started the scoring in the first half when she put away a Chelsea Campbell cross. Congratulations to Coach Jessica Murphy and the Warrior JV team for a great season!

The Warriors were dominated early then started to mount more of an attack. Nicole Payne sent a beautiful ball acroos the goal which found Kayla Gonzalez, whose header went just high. In the 14th minute, West clearing woes continued when they were unable to clear a corner kick. Brittini Salmon was caught off her line, and the ball was lofted into the goal.

Amanda Guzman and Annie Hagen shared the clean sheet. Megan Finkenbeiner scored in the 17th minute off a Kristed Pepperling back heel pass. Katie Kremer added another goal in the 29th minute. Finally, Chelsea Campbell scored her first goal of the year from a Michelle Guelff pass in the 49th minute. Updated on:December 12, 2007, 7:23 pmWest Dominates Play But Fails To FinishThe Warriors headed to the local surroundings of the South Torrance Tournament for the first time in 3 years, to take on Mayfield. The Warriors were very dominant in possession of the game and freshman Rebecca Maier scored her first goal of her career at West from a corner kick taken by steadily improving Kayla Gonzalez. The Warriors continued to dominate, but made a fatal mistake of clearing the ball to the center of the field. Mayfield's center mid hit a nice shot, with the wind, that went to the upper left hand corner of the Warrior goal.
Despite a continuous barrage in the second half, West was unable to penetrate the Mayfield goal for the game winner. After the 1-1 tie, the game went to penalty kicks to determine who went to the winners bracket. Unfortunately, West had a chance to win the contest on the final kick, but Maier's PK hit the post. Mayfield was one shot better than West in the sudden death battle, as Monica Campis' PK also struck the post. A tough way to end a game that should have been won by the Warriors easily in regulation, as West outshot Mayfield 17-4. Updated on:December 7, 2007, 8:09 pmWarriors Start Off On The Right Foot! The Warriors started off the season well today at the West HS varsity field. Dawning the traditional white and gold West uniform, the Warriors trotted out to the field with the air of confidence and regalness that could finally bring them the Bay League crown.
The Warriors started out quickly, controlling the game against Culver City from the very first whistle. In the 17th minute, Monica Campis made a powerful run up the field, ending in a hard shot on goal. The Culver keeper made the intial save, but bobbled the ball, and Nicole Payne placed the ball in the net for the first goal of the year. Ten minutes later, Lindsey Walsh found Payne with a pass at the top of the box. Payne then was able to chip the ball over the keeper for her second goal of the half.
The Warriors, came out with the same fire for the second half of the game. Once again, controlling the tempo and the play, West passed the ball with great accuracy. Five minutes into the second half, the Warriors followed a corner into the box. Culver City tried to clear the ball, but Jessica Marsella deflected the clearance back into the box. The ball found Samantha Hoffman, who touched it and in came Lindsey Walsh to out the ball into the Culver goal. West had many more opportunities throughout the game, but were unable to convert. Brittini Salmon had a relaxing afternoon in the net, making 4 saves on the day. West wins the season opener, 3-0 over Culver City.
In JV action, Katie Kremer scored 3 minutes into the season for West. Allie Levy added a perfectly placed goal to make it 2-0 going into halftime. In the second half, Megan Finkenbeiner finished off Culver City, slotting a ball home with 5 minutes left to play in the game. The back line of Rachel Hanners, Skye Kelty and Michelle Guelff were a solid line of defense, limiting Culver to only a few shots on goal each half. Amanda Guzman and Annie Hagen shared the shut out, each making 2 saves. Final score, 3-0. Updated on:November 28, 2007, 9:52 pmAlumni Game A Close AffairIt was a heated battle between the Alumni and the West High Varsity team. The alumni were off to a roaring start, catching the Varsity defense in a little confusion, and scored one minute into the game. After the initial adrenalin rush wore off the alumni, the Varsity Warriors took control of the game. There was a great display of passing the ball by the Laura Day, Rebecca Maier and Emily La Rue. Kayla Gonzalez was doing a great job running up the lin and getting the ball into the alumni teams box, which gave them lots of trouble. Heather Ostrom tied the game with 22 minutes on the clock. Laura Day, took a pass cut 2 defenders back and sent a shot over the head of alumni Gk Asley Taylor to take the lead 2 to 1.
The second half started out nicely for the Warriors, with 4 rookies on the field. Hilary Murphy did an excellent job of possessing the ball and making through passes to the forwards and outside mids. In the 53rd minute, Heather Ostrom struck again, taking an errant pass to the Keeper and putting the Varsity up 3-1. The Alumni wer not about to give up. In the 57th minute, Jessica Murphy, a crowd favorite, was able to beat the West midfield and take a shot from 30 yards out that floated over Brittini Salmon and into the top corner of the net, to bring the alumni within 1 goal. Murphy then struck again, with 13 minutes left, beating 2 West defenders and burying a goal in the net. The next 13 minutes were hard fought with great offensive displays by both teams. The game ended in a draw, 3-3.
Thanks to all the alumni for coming out and make sure you come to support us throughout the year!!!
In the annual FS v JV game, the JV blanked the FS team 4-0. Though, the early play favored the FS team, the JV took over and played well. Shayna Guitare and Kristen Pepperling had 2 goals a piece for the JV.
Updated on:November 21, 2007, 7:39 amALUMNI GAME TONIGHT @ 7PM- TUESDAY NOV 20Hello to all you Alum's! Sorry this hasn't been up earlier, but I have been having trouble accessing the website from school, which is the reason I have not updated the site.
Alumni Game is tonight at 7pm in the Stadium! So dust off those cleats and shinguards, and take on the new Varsity squad. I don't have access to oxygen tanks so when you go on, stay on only as long as you can.
PLEASE....EVERYBODY IS AN ALUMNI THAT PLAYS, SO EVERYONE SHOULD GET EQUAL TIME....last year I thought about disinviting a few older ladies who were having attitiude and saying it was "their" alumni game. This is a fun event and everyone should come out to enjoy themselves!
The varsity just finished 6am fitness week, so they are ready to go!!!
JV will play the FS at 4:30pm, coached by alumni Ashley Taylor and Jessica Murphy! Updated on:November 20, 2007, 11:24 amWelcome Back Warriors!!!The West HS soccer staff would like to welcome back all the West High Warriors to school for the coming year.
We hope that everyone is ready to work towards a stellar year on the field and in the classroom. First thing is first though, be prepared. Make sure that you are working on your 2 mile run time and that your are fit for tryouts! That means do a lot of sprinting to prepare for the Warrior tradition.
Also, before you can play or tryout, you need to turn in an medical athletic packet!!! This means you must have a doctor fill out a current physical(not a copy from last year). You can find it on this page, of the West High School website:
http://www.whs.tusd.org/vnews/display.v/ART/46043b79246cd
Make sure that the packet is turned in ASAP, so there are no questions about your Medical packet.
Work hard and see you soon!!!
